Human Rights and Equity

Wellington Catholic DSB believes every human person is a child of God and possesses an inherent dignity, regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or any other category that is used to divide or oppress.

We are committed to providing each student with a welcoming and safe learning environment that respects their unique identities and engages them as learners through relevant and responsive pedagogy. Our students and families come from diverse backgrounds with unique needs and gifts.

There is no place in Wellington Catholic for oppression, which can include, but is not limited to: racism, anti-Black racism, colonialism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, sexism, homophobia, ableism, antisemitism and transphobia. We recognize that naming oppressions is vital to addressing them and commits to the Calls to Action identified in the Dreams Delayed report and the Calls to Action identified in the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

It is essential that as a community committed to upholding the Church’s teachings on inclusivity, that Wellington Catholic ensures all members of our school community receive equitable opportunities for success. We are committed to creating a system that enables all students to meet high learning expectations by:

  • Cultivating a positive sense of self and belonging for each individual by respecting and responding to diverse identities and strengths.
  • Providing access to a broad range of programs, pathways and vocations.
  • Providing opportunities for all staff to engage in professional development to learn methodologies and skills that support culturally responsive and relevant practice.
  • Walking the path together with our Indigenous partners to increase our understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s ‘Calls to Action.’

Equity Committee  Mandate

Wellington Catholic DSB is committed to ensuring equitable and inclusive learning environments by creating opportunities for all employees, students, families and community members in our system. Inspired and guided by the Gospel, the principles of Social Justice, and our faith, the mandate of the Equity Committee is to support the wellbeing and belonging of our diverse students, staff and community in the Wellington Catholic District School Board.

We recognize our world has often not reflected the inherent dignity of all people, elevating and supporting some at the expense of others. We recognize that our system and practices can still reflect and perpetuate these structural biases and barriers, which are incompatible with our faith, and continue to harm members of our community. As Catholics we have a moral imperative to act intentionally to ensure those we serve are treated with respect and dignity, as we are all made in the image of God.

The Equity Committee is committed to identifying and disrupting oppressive systems and practices that undermine or deny the shared dignity of all. Grounded in the Ontario Human Rights Commission and our faith, the Equity Committee works for the benefit of all, including future generations, by intentionally reflecting upon our practices.

The Wellington Catholic DSB Equity Committee is an advisory body to the Executive Council. The Equity Committee provides recommendations to support the Board’s work in fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for all, “regardless of situation or circumstance.”
